Frank Land OBE

1928–2026

Role: Early design team of LEO

Responsibility: Worked alongside Mary Coombs to design LEO

Frank Land, identical twin to Ralph Land, fled Germany in the aftermath of Kristallnacht, and the pair changed their names from Landsberger to Land. Frank was instrumental in the design and development of the first LEO alongside Mary Coombs (née Blood), and went on to become the first Professor of Information Systems in the United Kingdom.

He is famously quoted in saying:

“The LEO Story provides so many examples of smart thinking and actions. One example is the endeavour to recover from emergency situations without serious interruptions of customer service.”
