Role: First LEO programmer
Responsibility: Wrote first payroll program
Having joined J. Lyons & Co. as a management trainee in 1939, he returned to work in the Systems Research Office under David Caminer after serving in the Royal Signals Corps in World War II. When Caminer developed the programming team, Hemy was selected as the first programmer, a Role: at which he was outstanding. He led a small team of highly motivated programmers and developed operating systems and programming techniques for LEO computer programs, the first commercial programs in the world. Hemy wrote,
It is easy to remember much of what we did, but somehow easier still to remember the instinctive mutual understanding, the comradeship and the high good humour with which we all tackled it.
Hemy left LEO Computers in 1955, later becoming a consultant for Unilever.
