Who we are
The LEO Computers Society is a registered charity (number 1182253). We collect and share the history of LEO, the world’s first business computer, and of the people who built and used it.
This policy explains what personal information we collect through this website, how we use it and what your rights are. We are responsible for that information under UK data protection law: the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

What we collect and why
When you join us
The form on our Join us page asks for:
- your name, title and any previous or maiden name
- your email address, phone numbers and postal address
- your connection with LEO, your career and background, and whether you have photographs or memorabilia to share
- your date of birth, if you choose to give it
- how you’d like to hear from us, by email or post
We use this to look after your membership, keep you up to date with news, events and meetings, and, if you’ve said you’re happy to, talk to you about your memories, photographs and memorabilia for our archive. We do this with your consent, which you give when you send the form and can withdraw at any time.
When you email us
If you email us, we use your email address and anything you tell us to reply and deal with your enquiry.
When you visit the website
We don’t use analytics or advertising tracking. Our hosting company keeps short-term records of visits, including IP addresses, to protect the website against attacks and misuse. We do this because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the website secure.
Mailchimp
We manage our membership list and emails with Mailchimp, a service run by Intuit in the United States. When you send the Join us form, your details go straight to Mailchimp. Information sent to the United States is protected by safeguards recognised under UK law. You can read Intuit’s privacy statement.
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, or you can email us and ask us to remove you.
Cookies
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. When you first visit, we ask which cookies you’re happy to accept, and we remember your choice in a cookie.
- Necessary cookies remember your cookie choices, and keep the people who manage the website signed in. Visitors who don’t sign in don’t get sign-in cookies.
- YouTube: some pages include videos from YouTube. If you play one, YouTube (owned by Google) may set cookies and collect information about your viewing, under Google’s privacy policy.
We don’t use cookies for analytics or advertising. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings.
Who we share it with
We never sell your information. We only share it with the services that help us run the Society and this website:
- Mailchimp (Intuit), for our membership list and emails
- SiteGround, which hosts this website
- YouTube (Google), only if you play a video on the website
We would only share it with anyone else if the law required us to.
How long we keep it
We keep your membership details for as long as you’re a member or on our mailing list. If you leave, or ask us to remove you, we’ll delete your details, unless you’ve agreed that we can keep your memories or contributions as part of the Society’s historical archive.
We keep emails for as long as we need them to deal with your enquiry. Our hosting company’s security records are deleted automatically after a short time.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the information we hold about you
- ask us to correct anything that’s wrong or incomplete
- ask us to delete your information
- object to, or ask us to limit, how we use it
- withdraw your consent at any time (this doesn’t affect anything we did before you withdrew it)
- ask for your information in a format you can take to another organisation
To use any of these rights, email us at info@leo-computers.org.uk. We’ll reply within one month.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator.
